The Unst, Whalsay and Yell Tunnel Action Groups strongly advocate for the development of tunnels as a transformative solution for inter-island transport in Shetland. The advantages of tunnels over ferries are clear, compelling, and necessary for the future of our communities.

As Tunnel Action Groups we have not made much comment in relation to the current issues besetting the ferry service to our islands.

The Tunnel Action Groups have responded to Shetland Islands Council’s appointment of a consultant to review Shetland’s inter-island transport needs.

A report released today following Yell and Unst Tunnel Action Groups’ recent visit to the Faroe Islands highights a series of potential social and economic benefits should the Shetland projects go ahead.

News on a four-day fact finding visit to the Faroe Islands, which revealed many significant parallels with Shetland and provided extensive information and inspiration on all aspects of the islands’ tunnelling experience.

Tunnel Action Groups have welcomed the news that Shetland Islands Council is to meet with Alistair Jack MP, Secretary of State for Scotland.

A major campaign to explore the potential for sub-sea tunnels connecting Yell and Unst with the Shetland mainland has been launched.
