Transformative Solution for Inter-Island Transport

The Unst, Whalsay and Yell Tunnel Action Groups strongly advocate for the development of tunnels as a transformative solution for inter-island transport in Shetland. The advantages of tunnels over ferries are clear, compelling, and necessary for the future of our communities.

Cost-effective

Tunnels require less than 10 per cent of the annual operating costs of the current ferry system. This massive reduction in expenses would allow for substantial reinvestment in local infrastructure, education, and healthcare, ensuring that public funds are used more effectively for Shetland as a whole. Tunnels represent the responsible fiscal option, reducing the financial burden on the taxpayer.

An unparalleled opportunity to drastically reduce our carbon footprint

By switching from ferries to tunnels, we can cut carbon emissions by approximately 90 per cent on our inter-island transport. This shift aligns with global and national climate goals, helping to protect our environment for future generations. By choosing tunnels, Shetland can lead the way in Scotland demonstrating how rural communities can make significant contributions to environmental sustainability (as our Scandinavian neighbours have already achieved).

Reliable connectivity for economic growth

Unlike ferries, which are subject to the whims of weather, mechanical breakdowns and increasing crewing shortages, tunnels offer a reliable, 24/7 connection between our islands. This reliability is crucial for commuters, businesses, and emergency services. It ensures that goods and services can be transported efficiently, without delays, supporting the economic vitality of our islands. For residents, tunnels mean uninterrupted access to jobs, education, sport and healthcare, mitigating the inequalities that exist from geographical isolation. Given the ongoing development of the Space industry in Unst, proposed renewable developments, and major fisheries and aquaculture activity in the North Isles, it would widen opportunities for employment in these industries to people from across Shetland.

Strengthening communities

Tunnels provide a level of inclusivity that ferries simply cannot match. By eliminating the challenges posed by unpredictable ferry schedules, tunnels offer unrestricted access to all, this inclusivity is essential for Shetland, where every resident has the same opportunities to thrive.

Sustainable, reliable and inclusive

As we look to the future, it’s clear that tunnels are not just a better option—they are the best option. They promise a sustainable, reliable, and inclusive future for Shetland, ensuring that Shetland becomes increasingly connected, vibrant and resilient.
